Introduction
In the EU there is a large need for sustainable building and energy reductions. Whereas for new building the standards are quickly increasing, old building remain a problem. The stock of old building is however by far and large the biggest part of the total volume of building.

In an EU funded project, stakeholders from various EU countries are brought together to gather information and best practices how existing building can be renovated with the best effects on sustainability.

Assignment
In 2011, start of 2012 interviews are being organised with suppliers of building materials and equipment throughout the EU, to explore their view on sustsinable renovations as a market. Moreover, their current way of working and needs are explored, in terms of technical capability, knowledge, access to information and ways how they can work together to acquire projects in this market. Especically small companies are currently facing difficulties in this.
These interviews (results of which will be available in English) will be input for a next stage.

Main question
This assignment therefore puts together the interview and other information to answer the question: “How does the market for sustainable renovations work, how can (small) SMEs get better access to it?”. The assignment maps out both the current situation and the desired situation.

The assignment covers several countries and aims to bring together the learning effects from these countries as well. Depending on the results, there may be concrete advice to the project, but mapping the situation is the priority.

Commissioning party and facilities
For this assignment de Municipality of Zoetermeer is the commissioning party. The student will there part time in Zoetermeer and two days a week at the AIDA office (Rotterdam). There is no monetary internship allowance; there are however several possibilities for the student to get more immaterial rewards like going to (international) conferences.
The assignment will be executed in the period February – June 2012.

Relevant study backgrounds
The student needs to be able to understand how companies think, therefore a more business oriented background seems in order. With the addition that a technical affinity is strongly desired. Students with energy and/or building/architecture background that have commercial affinity are therefore equally suitable.
